How to switch

New customers

If you don’t have a Santander business current account, you can visit our how to apply tool for more information on how to open an account.

As part of the account opening process, we’ll ask you if you want to switch to Santander.

Existing customers

If you have a Santander business current account and would like to switch a business current account that you hold with another bank to it, please give us a call on 0800 085 2202.

Choose your switch date

This can be up to 60 days in the future

Stay up to date

We'll keep you updated on progress by letter, text or email

We'll do the hard work

Like closing your old account and moving payments

It's important that the details you give us are up-to-date and also match the ones held at your old bank. If you need to update anything with us or your other bank, you will need to do that before you start the switch, or it will fail.

What gets switched?

We’ll move over:

  • your account balance
  • your payments going out (like any Direct Debits or standing orders)
  • your payments coming in (for example, payments from your customers).

We’ll arrange for payments accidentally made to your old account to be automatically redirected to your new account.

You'll need to update any recurring card payments or subscriptions on your old account as this will not be done as part of the switching process.

What you'll need

Before we can start your switch, you’ll be asked to tell us:

  • your old account sort code and account number
  • your existing debit card number and expiry date
  • if there’s more than one cardholder on the account, we’ll need the debit card details for all applicants
  • details of any associated parties on the account.

What happens when I switch?

You choose when your switch starts - this can be up to 60 days in the future.

Day 1

On your chosen switch start date, we'll ask your old bank for a list of your payments (for example, standing orders and Direct Debits).

We’ll update you on our progress by email or letter, depending on your preferences.

Day 2-6

We'll set up the payments on your Santander account.

We'll tell the companies you pay by Direct Debit to collect future payments from your new account and also anyone paying money into your account to send payments to your new account from now on.

Make sure to update any recurring card payments or subscriptions on your old account as this will not be done as part of the switching process.

Day 7

Your switch is complete.

If you have a positive balance, it will be transferred to your Santander account, and your old account will be closed.

If you have an overdrawn balance and it’s not cleared by day 7, you’ll need to check with your old bank for details on arranging to clear it and closing your account.

From the day your switch completes, we'll automatically redirect any payments from your old account to your Santander account. We'll do this for a period of three years or longer, in accordance with the Current Account Switch Agreement.

Following your switch:

  • If this is a new current account, you'll have received your cards and PINs, as well as your Online and Telephone Banking registration details, if you've requested them.
  • Any payments switched from your old account will start coming out of your Santander account, so you should make sure you have enough money in your new account to cover them.

Can I change my mind after I set up the switch?

You can cancel your switch up to seven working days before your switch date. If you do want to cancel, speak to your new bank, who will guide you through the process. Once the switch has begun, the switch process can't be cancelled, and your old account will close.

Can I switch my current account if I am overdrawn?

If your old account has an overdrawn balance, you’ll need to clear it with the old bank, but you can still switch your business current account to us using the Current Account Switch Service.

As part of your current account application, you can apply for a business overdraft from £500 to £25,000 (subject to acceptance). When you apply for an arranged business overdraft with us, we’ll look at your circumstances. We’ll then let you know if you can have one, and how much you can borrow. You must repay any overdraft when we ask you to in line with our General Terms and Conditions. Please visit our overdraft page for more information and how to apply.

Overdrafts are subject to status and require a credit check.

Where can I find out more about the Current Account Switch Guarantee?

You can find more information through the CASS website

If you’re using any services provided by TPPs on the current account you’re switching over to us, then this access will not be switched to your new account.

They might include services like aggregation (the ability to see your accounts from more than one provider in one place), money management or other services where you’re providing permission for a third-party company to have access to information or carry out payments on your behalf. Our terms and conditions provide more information about TPPs permissions.

There are a couple of simple things you’ll need to do to move these services over to your new account.

  1. If you don’t know which TPPs are accessing your account then before you close your old account, check which permissions are active.
  2. When your new account is open you’ll need to set up access to your new account with your TPP.

There are some types of accounts that can’t be used with TPPs. Current accounts that you can use online will be included.
